2000 was the most challenging year of my life, after a week of sleeping and feeling groggy to the point I didn't even know my teachers name, my mom took me to the hospital. The Doctor came into the room and told my mom I was being Medavacted to Anchorage, my sugar had gotten past 700 and I was lucky I wasn't in a coma! After being up in anchorage and the doctors explaining what Type 1 Diabetes was, we knew life was going to change forever.
I never really knew how much work the pancreas actually does until I had to do it all manually. Being 9 years old and having to think 24/7 about the smallest details of everyday life was a new concept that most kids don't understand. Seeing all of my friends continue their life when mine was changing so drastically was difficult and naturally I became depressed.
Thankfully as I was growing up my mom was always there to help, but like any kid, I didn't realize how serious Type 1 can really get. As I got older I left for collage, I just wanted to be like everyone else for a change, and went from checking my sugar 3 to 4 times a day to maybe twice a week!I was sadly in party mode and would shortly learn my lesson.
In 2017 I finished school and got hired at my dream job working on 911 Porches! Shortly after I decided to come back to Homer and be with my son again. Little did I realize my life was about to change drastically again....
The summer 2017 I became sick again and had to get surgery to remove an infection in my blood. That was the beginning of it all. After being released from the hospital I started to feel sharp shooting pain down my legs and I could hardly stand more than an hour at a time.
Long story short I had nerve damage. The damage started to get worse as time went by and now has effected my digestive system. I quickly went from 180lbs to being 125lbs.
But there is hope :)
