FREESTYLE LIBRE 14 DAY SYSTEM
The FreeStyle Libre comes in 2 options, a 10 day system and a upgraded 14 day system. The round white sensor has flexible filament inserted just under the skin to measure blood sugar levels every minute! The small handheld reader scans the sensor without having to prick your finger.
This meter has changed my life, going from checking my sugar 3 or 4 times a day to now checking it painlessly around 8 - 10 times a day!
One of the most useful features for me was simply the ease of not having to carry around a meter along with test strips and the lancet. Being able to check my sugar in public in only seconds and not drawing attention to me was amazing in itself!
670G INSULIN PUMP BY MEDTRONIC
The 670G insulin pump is making a name for itself in the lives of Diabetic's with the right insurance coverage. It has given many diabetics so much more than just a level blood sugar, but also hope in a brighter future!
First off let me say this device is complex and has so many features! Switching from the insulin pens to the pump is a totally new reality, which has it's pro's & cons.
Right off the bat, I noticed that instead of carrying around an insulin pen, I am now lugging around a bigger supply bag with more supplies. For anyone that isn't covered by insurance would be suffocating by supply costs!
(Keep in mind most pros outweigh the con's, but this is a diabetic perspective review, where I cover the day to day life with the tech.)
Within the first day, this new device kept my sugars under 200 consistently! I was impressed, seeing I was coming off a week of the diabetic roller coaster. (for those nondiabetic's, my glucose levels were randomly ranging from 150- 300 on an average!)
My biggest pet peeve with the 670G is that it has an alarm for EVERYTHING and it will tell you when somethings changing no matter what your current schedule looks like. I understand that you can change all of this in the settings but why would you? It may get annoying but it has saved my life multiple times.
Now let's see how life-changing it is! For a Diabetic your A1C is an important number, not only to you but also your Doctor. I've been testing this pump out for 2 weeks now and my most recent A1C was 7.1! (An A1C less than 7% means your an in a healthy range.)
The Pump has 2 modes, a manual mode, and an Auto mode. So far I have only gotten to try the manual mode but I am impressed, to say the least, and am excited for what is coming next! Stay Tuned for the Auto mode review! (Pump needs a week of data to switch to auto.)
Be prepared to have to still check your sugar with finger pricks due to the pump needing calibration every 4-6 hours it seems. It does, however, communicates with your pump and gives it a guideline sugar (every 5 mins) you can go off as long as your levels aren't seriously dropping or raising. Be careful though because sometimes the sensor is not accurate whatsoever. Be sure to test normally if you feel abnormal!
All in all, for the first time a type 1 can feel in control and confident with life. The 670G is so much more than a pump, its a game changer!
